even point six million co m p a n i o n a n i m a l s enter animal shelters nationwide every year, according to the ASPCA. They also cite a staggering statistic of approximately 2.7 million of those animals being euthanized. Admittedly, I have yet to adopt a pet from shelter… which now is surprising to me considering the vast number of local shelters and rescues! (Check out our website this month for a list of those close by). But when I do decide to get another dog, you can bet your bottom dollar I will be doing some rescuing. Everyone needs to be rescued at some point, right? I am happy to return the favor and get paid back 10 times over in return. After seeing how many photo submissions we received this year for Style’s annual People & Their Pets, it’s clear that most of us are very, very fond of our fur family members. It was a daily pleasure to open each new email and instantly smile upon viewing local peeps and their “We have more beloved pets. People even sent notes of sentiment for to learn from their pet or detailed the memory associated with that particular photo. It was quite endearing—but most of animals than all rewarding—to put together this feature. Smiling is animals have so satisfying and this month will have you full of gigto learn from gles. Turn the pages to find the area’s cutest celebrity us.” —Anthony pooches, kitties and more. Also this month, don’t miss our eighth annual listDouglas ing of accomplished local authors and their published Williams works in Shelf Life, compiled by Simran Dhami. In the Home Design department, Kerrie Kelly gives us six tips for “Creating a Home Office Haven.” Turning to the last page, don’t miss Tom Mailey’s hilarious tale of duck ownership in Tom’s Take. Yep, your read correctly—duck ownership. Until next month, enjoy the pages of Style and the final dog days of summer! — Desiree

asktheexperts Q:

Is it safe to exercise after having lap band surgery? Is there anything I should be worried about?

A: Exercise is not only safe but also encouraged after lap band surgery. The lap band is positioned internally around the stomach to control hunger and portion sizes. The system is adjusted by adding fluid to a small port, which is implanted deep under the skin and secured to the abdominal wall muscle. There is no risk of band dislocation or damage—even with high-impact exercise or vigorous sports. At times, the port may become transiently tender, especially if doing core exercises, but it should be mild and resolve quickly (similar to how a sore muscle recovers after exercise). I have seen many patients excel with their health transformations after lap band surgery and actively run marathons, participate in extreme sports, and even compete in fitness competitions. —Laura L. ABLATIVE FULL-FACE LASER RESURFACING serious, even life-threatening diseases. Nearly 80 percent of dogs and cats show signs of oral disease by age three, which can be easily prevented just by routinely brushing their teeth! Although all dogs (and cats) develop plaque, we generally see that smaller breeds—such as Chihuahuas, Yorkies and Pomeranians—start showing signs of periodontal disease at a much earlier age than other large-breed dogs. Ideally, you should brush your dog’s teeth daily to remove plaque before it has time to mineralize. —Teresa Plagman, DVM, Small Animal Veterinarian The Natural Pet Tooth Fairy 2780 East Bidwell Street, Folsom 888-508-9904, naturalpettoothfairy.com August 2016 - stylefedh.com 13

Q&A Q: What comes to you naturally? A: Learning. I love to learn and to read. I guess this explains why I never left the school environment. Q: What’s your biggest pet peeve? A: Being late. It really bothers me when I cannot stay perfectly on schedule all day. I feel that it’s rude to be late when you made a commitment to be somewhere at a certain time. Q: What are you most proud of? A: My daughter. She’s an incredibly kind and giving person—the kind of person who will make the world a better place. Q: Best words of wisdom you’ve received? A: If you always follow your passion, the rest will work itself out. Q: What’s next? A: Working with the incredible team we have here at Oak Ridge High School to ensure the coming year is the best one possible.

aron Palm took the reins as principal of Oak Ridge High School in June, a role he never would have thought possible for himself when he was a teenager. “I had no clue what I wanted to do in high school,” Palm ruefully admits. He grew up in the Bay Area, the child of working-class parents, and it wasn’t until he started working as a tutor that he realized he might make a good teacher. His high school history teacher and mentor, Mr. Stocking— who urged him to go to college—was especially influential. After completing a history degree, Palm spent six years as a history teacher before moving into the administrative side of the education field. For Palm, the shift to a leadership posi18 stylefedh.com - August 2016

tion was the next logical step on the road to making a difference in children’s lives. “I wanted the opportunity to have a bigger impact…on a whole school,” he explains. As Oak Ridge’s new principal, he aims to continue to close the gap between performing and underperforming students, along with the help of parents, educators and other members of the community. He’s also a strong advocate for anti-bullying campaigns; as the father of a fiveyear-old daughter, he understands how important safe and caring learning environments are for children to fulfill their maximum potential. “Kids don’t want to know what you know, until they know that you care,” he shares. — Amber Foster

Johnny Cash Trail Phase 2 Construction will begin this fall on the second half of this popular trail. The project includes a tunnel under Prison Road at Natoma Street to bypass the busy intersection, and a 160-foot-long wood arched bridge that will span a ravine behind the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary. Trail users will be able to enjoy expansive views of the American River and Lake Natoma as they travel along the bridge. District, Lake Natoma and the American River Trail. As with the existing portion of the Johnny Cash Trail, the majority of Phase 2 will be built on Folsom State Prison property. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has been a generous partner, granting the City of Folsom with the easement for the trail. Funding for Phase

This 3/4-mile loop trail will open in fall, after trees are planted during Folsom’s Community Service Day on Saturday, September 17, and other enhancements are completed. The trail, which will be ADA accessible, begins at the sidewalk along Gold Lake Drive in Folsom’s Historic District and continues along the shoreline of Lake Natoma. Trail users can pause to enjoy the scenic beauty of the area from three overlooks and benches placed along the trail, and a ramp provides access for paddlers to launch kayaks and paddle boards. Construction on the trail began in fall of 2015, and is a cooperative effort between the city, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Funding was provided by a Proposition 50 grant and a federal recreational trails grant.

99 Ranch Market

9 Ranch Market, a shiny new hub for Asian-American groceries at competitive prices, offers cuisine too—with a deliciously authentic dim sum bar featuring traditional favorites like pot stickers and rice dumplings, along with exotic entrées such as minced green pastries. With my face pressed against the bar’s glass, mouth watering at the thought of devouring these foreign delicacies, I grabbed a pan fried radish cake, pork and shrimp shu mai, pot sticker, shrimp har gow and—to top it off—an egg roll. Why not go big when you can load up on these enticing offerings for one flat price? Though I enjoyed every last bite, I must admit: The radish cake was the one having my palate longing for more. Fried to a crisp golden brown, my tastebuds rejoiced with the soft, fluffy middle that released savory flavors of bold radish, dried shrimp, and sharp hints of pepper. It comes as no surprise that dim sum translates to “touch the heart,” as these snacks will not only fill your stomach with delectable goodness, but your heart too. 99 Ranch Market, 25000 Blue Ravine Road, Suite 103, Folsom. 916-984-6899, 99ranch.com. —Simran Dhami

This was the 36th year of the re-ride, with 600 participants riding 24 hours a day for 10 days—all to commemorate the 1860-1861 Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company, which carried letters and telegrams for 19 months to prove the Central Route through Salt Lake City was passable year-round.

The Rolling Hills Blue Star Moms are setting the table on August 27 to bring communities together under a common goal: aiding local military families. Moms at the annual Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser—held at the Folsom Veterans Hall— will give attendees a seat, a plate and overwhelming gratitude for supporting their efforts to help the military community. One-hundred percent of the proceeds contribute to sending care packages to deployed military members and assisting veteran organizations, gold and silver-star families, families with currently deployed members, and any other local requests. This cause is especially dear to the Rolling Hills Blue Star Moms, as the members are mothers to children currently serving or who have served the country. The military families’ involvement and heavy attendance make the event all worth the effort to the Moms. “Interacting with [the families], listening to their stories and making new friends—that’s just the best,” says Chapter President Leslie Wade. Purchasing a ticket ($10 for adults, $5 for children 3-12, and free for those under 2) not only supports these programs, but it also enters guests into the door prize raffle: two, one-day passes to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. There are 20 other raffle baskets individually valued at over $200, and a grand prize of four, one-day Park Hopper passes to Disneyland and California Adventure. The Moms thought of everything to maximize this fund-raiser’s success, as a “Drive Through, To-Go” is introduced to accommodate guests on the go; beer, wine, liquors and soda will be available at an additional cost. skies, mountains and trees are all sacred elements of this world that man alone can never create. I’m truly in awe of it all. I always say, “I hope you’re inspired by my photography, as you see the world through my eyes,” and I sincerely mean that. I always enjoy hearing other people’s interpretation of my work. One particular client really touched my heart. She was looking at one of my photos of a tumultuous cloud formation, and she got very emotional. She has bipolar disorder and told me the photo reminds her of the erratic feelings and behaviors she can experience on any given day. The photo is soothing to her; it makes her feel understood. How great is that?

idely known as a California nature photographer, Ruby Pacheco first began snapping photos while on trips to Pebble Beach and Carmel with her husband David. After taking postcard-like pictures, the artist began honing in on how gorgeous the scenery she captured was and how it made her feel. “I began to see so much more depth in the beautiful n a t u re t h e re — a n d eve r y w h e re e l s e I went—and began capturing it through p h o t o g ra p h y i n a w h o l e n e w w a y, ” Pacheco shares. “So now, everywhere I travel—and locally—I take photos that don’t just capture the beautiful scenery, but also reflect my unique view of it.” Pacheco’s stunning images will be on display at the Folsom Arts Association’s Members’

to capture that nature scene and make the moment freeze in time; it’s affecting me in some sort of personal, emotional way. After, I use editing software to intensify the colors and enhance the textures of what I experienced at the time. I never add anything to the photo that wasn’t originally there. HLB: How have you improved your art over time? RP: I’ve developed an eye for photography. Glowing Rock

I take much better p h o t o s n o w, a n d my editing skills have advanced. I’m constantly learning new ways to enhance my photos so I can convey to the viewer how I felt at the time I took it. To me, it’s not just about sharing a beautiful photo, but also sharing my personal experience. I think that’s a fresh take on nature photography.

HLB: Bold, beautiful sunsets, horizons and nature scenes are common themes throughout your work. What magic do those

HLB: What advice can you give those looking to find their artistic niche? RP: One of the reasons my favorite artist, Christian Jequel, inspires me is because he’s an unapologetic, self-taught artist. He said no one could teach him because he has his own style, and now he teaches it to others. I think the moral of the story is that it’s important and enriching to learn from others, but don’t try to copy anyone else’s work. It’s more important to connect personally with what you’re photographing. If it comes from your own heart, you’ll never imitate anyone else. Be yourself.

your best self A Guide to Life Coaching by Tara Mendanha

W

ho here doesn’t want the perfect day, the perfect job and the all-round perfect life? You don’t have to ask me twice! It may have started out as a trend, but life coaching seems to have gained a lot of momentum recently. From Oprah Winfrey to Metallica, celebrities have been using this resource to tap into their best selves for years. But what is it really? By talking

to a few local experts in the field, I found that the concept is quite nuanced.

Why is it useful? “Coaching addresses obstacles that have kept us stuck, as it empowers forward action toward making long-term behavior changes,” says Heather Penny, Ph.D., professional coach, and president and founder of Arise & Be in Roseville. Carmil Surritt, life coach in Placerville, adds: “Einstein said, ‘The mind that created the problem cannot solve it’…as coaches, we’re listening and asking questions to help a client work past limiting beliefs. We do not know what is best for the client—the client does—and we help them hold themselves accountable to the action steps they

COLOR YOUR WORLD Mindful Coloring Box, a monthly subscription box that was created by Jenifer Novak Landers—Folsom-based life coach, art teacher, graphic designer, creativity consultant, and the list goes on…—invites you to unplug, meditate and nourish your soul by bringing out your inner Picasso. Every month brings a different themed box (“Gratitude,” for example) that’s filled with premium art supplies, a coloring project folder (two cards and envelopes, four postcards and a variety of frame-worthy art projects) and a 32-page “Guided Meditation Coloring Book”—all aimed to help you build deeper self-awareness and inspiration, increase problem-solving skills, sharpen your focus and open perspectives. determine.” So in effect, life coach equals part coach, part cheerleader.

Who does it benefit? How does one know if they need a counselor or coach? “In an oversimplified nutshell, counseling is the process of looking backwards and resolving past issues; coaching is the process of looking forward and identifying what holds us

back in order to gain forward momentum in achieving life goals,” says Penny. There are various types of life coaches who follow different processes and have their own set of tools. From financial and family coaches, to mental health and wellness coaches, there’s someone for everyone. Chris Wagner, esthetician and owner of Advanced Skin Solutions in Fair Oaks, as well as a new thought practitioner, focuses on the spiritual aspect of life coaching. “Spiritual practitioner is akin to life coaching…however, spiritual work goes deeper. This is a lifelong journey, a gradual and progressive movement toward spiritual maturity,” she says.

When should you hire one? Life coaching seems to address a host of issues pertaining to…well, life. Achieving goals, pushing limits, finding your voice, making better decisions or starting a new career are all reasons to get a coach. Like Surritt says, “I have clients from age 11 to age 76; they’re people confused about the direction and choices they are facing, parents struggling with teenagers, executives looking for balance in their life, and retirees who still want to make an impact on the world.”

Photo © vladimirfloyd/fotolia.com. Other images courtesy of their respective copanies.

The “how” Sessions typically last an hour or less, and can be needed from four days up to two years, according to Surritt. In a nutshell, each session typically involves a conversation to check how the client is progressing toward their goal and what they need t o d o n ex t . Wa g n e r ’s approach is to give clients the tools and techniques to naturally attract what they’re seeking, often using affirmations and meditation, while Penny uses the co-active model of coaching, where coach a n d c l i e n t a re a c t i ve c o l l a b o ra t o r s f o c u s e d on the client’s agenda, while concentrating on the “three Cs”: clarity, confidence and courage. Success is measured by an increased sense of selfworth, accomplishments in specific areas of life and an overall increase in happiness. “The goal is to have the client discover their unique combination of gifts and talents, unlock their passion to make their lives blossom and in some way contribute more to their families and communities,” says Surritt. For Wagner, success is measured by how peaceful clients become and how they respond to life’s situations.

What now? “Find a coach who fits your goals, your personality and your style of relating. Interview coaches until you find one that validates what you are looking for and how you want to move forward…only you can determine what you need and want,” says Penny. And once you do, you could come close to acing life. “When clients choose coaching, they get about 90 percent of what they are wanting, and it stays with them,” shares Surritt. “It’s all about making this world a more loving and kinder place,” says Wagner.

RETREAT TO BLISS I had the good fortune of attending one of Arise & Be’s day-long retreats this spring, titled: Explore Your Voice. In a quiet corner of Roseville, a group of women gathered for what would turn out to be a liberating experience for some and an enlightening one for others. Me? I soaked up and enjoyed every second. From the bag of goodies and sumptuous lunch, to surprisingly deep conversations and hands-on crafts, the care and attention to detail that went into everything—including individual place settings and the day’s materials—had me hooked from beginning to end. I got to make my own “voice canvas,” while sitting under the shade of stoic trees. Using colorful hexagon-shaped tissue paper, we were taught to make a decoupage canvas and cover it with words that represented the best version of ourselves. My canvas called me “empathetic,” “gifted” and “self-aware.” We went through exercises that pondered spaces within us and among us, spiritual intelligence, strength and sensitivity, and finding and developing an inner voice. Heather guided us through the day with her gentle demeanor and graceful way, leading us from one thought to another in a seamless process that felt like one long, soothing lullaby. Michaela, Sharon and Meredith, co-founders of Arise & Be, buddied up to the group in a heartbeat and were beacons of light through group discussions, lunch and in between. The strangers we’d been to each other at the beginning of the day were now supporters and confidants, knowing not only each other’s names, but heartaches and burning desires too. Every woman that day left with an unwavering voice, a peaceful glow about her—and a brownie, of course. Arise & Be offers a range of retreats, a lively podcast, and as of recently, an e-course on The Clarity Process. For more info, visit ariseandbe.com/events.

blessings in a backpack Feeding Local Youth in Need by Dayana Stockdale // photos by Dante Fontana

48 stylefedh.com - August 2016

T

wo years ago, Janice Davis, better known as JD, was watching an evening special on TV with her husband. They learned about a phenomenon they had never heard of before—millions of children going hungry on the weekends when not receiving food from the free and reduced lunch programs at their schools. At the time, Davis was hunting for a volunteer opportunity. She discovered that a few different national organizations devoted themselves to the cause of weekend meals for children, but that these groups were in the habit of taking 20 percent or more of what the chapters raised. When Davis came across Blessings in a Backpack—a national nonprofit that keeps none of the funds raised by chapters but provides endless support—however, it was a true blessing. “They’re there at the drop of an email,” she says. Davis and her husband now serve weekend food (six meals

Hannah McKinney, Lindsay Paredes, Maggie Smith, Tommy Smith and Logan Paredes

and two snacks) to 50 children in each of four different Folsom-Cordova Unified School District elementary schools, with two additional schools being added in the coming school year. “I have more schools who want to get on the program than we have funds for,” says Davis. While many students qualify for free and reduced lunch at school, Blessings in a Backpack seeks to only feed those who truly need the weekend food. Davis’ roster of kids is informed by each of the school’s teachers, principal and counselors; to keep it discreet, teachers place the bags of food in the students’ backpacks during Friday recess. Initially, junior volunteers would help pack the food bags at the Davis’ church, but with new sports seasons causing the

loss of young volunteers and the church often needing the space for other functions, it was getting chaotic. Then Davis noticed a new opportunity. “When I pulled up after school, the kids would flock to my car to help us unload the food,” she explains. Realizing that these kids were aching to help, she now delivers the bulk items and has the student councils or after-school clubs pack the bags. “I have students at each of my schools pack the food bags, because we believe that kids helping kids just helps to create a little more kindness amongst others,” she says. What’s more, bringing volunteerism into the schools has paved the way for more education on food insecurity. Davis turned the book Maddi’s Fridge by Lois Brandt into a skit acted out by five kids from each

school. “We educate the kids on how to be a better friend [and what to do] if you go to a friend’s house and their refrigerator is empty, and they make you promise not to tell anybody,” says Davis. “It’s a basic story that allows the conversation to flow and lets kids know it’s okay to help other kids when they don’t have any food.” Junior volunteers pay it forward by assisting with fund-raising, too. They help out at Blessings in a Backpack’s annual events and run their own mini food drives by going door to door. “We want to be the kind of organization that can offer these opportunities to kids,” says Davis, who has found unexpected joy in not only sharing food but also spreading kindness.

homedesign

all in a day’s work Creating a Home Office Haven: 6 Tips by Kerrie L. Kelly, ASID

1 / Let the Light In Nothing inspires us more than a sundrenched space. If your room gets great natural light, use it! Frame your windows with curtains that you can draw should the space get too bright, and choose a fanciful overhead light like a chandelier if your office is go-getter-glam, a table lamp perched on your desk, or a floor lamp in the corner to highlight your accolades on the wall.

2 / Invest in the Best If you know you’ll be perched at your desk for most of the day, cut yourself some slack and invest in a really great chair or super sturdy desk. Opt for an office chair that’s fashionable and functional, ergonomically

correct and comfortable. A durable desk is also a key investment, because you’ll be at it more often than not and it’ll most likely deal with a coffee spill or two.

3 / Take Texture to the Top If you’re looking to create an elegant space to write emails and hold client meetings, look for unique textures that add character to your space, like a natural fiber rug, lacquered tables and textured wallpaper. Anyone can create a cookie-cutter cubicle, but by adding texture to your home office you elevate its style from drab to fab.

4 / Tame Technology One of the only obstacles we ever run into when curating a home office space is what to do with all of the necessary accessories that accompany our favorite pieces of technology. While you can’t necessarily beautify a printer, you

can certainly mask its messiness. Many organizational or office stores now carry cord covers to help disentangle cords, headphones and tech accessories, allowing you to work more efficiently in a less cluttered space.

5 / Make it Efficient Home offices are a hybrid—they need to be work-appropriate and have homey elements sprinkled throughout, and because most aren’t swimming in square footage, it’s imperative to use each nook and cranny efficiently. For instance, don’t just put storage on the floor in the form of file cabinets or bookcases; instead, install floating shelves, hooks and other wall accessories that will help make your space less cluttered and more work-friendly.

6 / Get Inspired When it’s 3 o’clock on a Friday afternoon, the very last thing you want to be doing is editing a business proposal or answering emails. To help bolster your enthusiasm and finish those last little tasks, add inspiration to your space via pictures, art, colors or anything else you love. A few cherished knick-knacks or accessories will help remind you why you’re there and what you’re working toward.

FRANK WITH WILLIAM (HUMAN)

PEDRO

“Pedro (named by our, at the time, twoand-a-half-year-old son) is a desert tortoise. His favorite things are basking in the warm sun and eating dandelions. He’s almost a year old and is about two-to-three inches long. Pedro enjoys having his legs and chin scratched.”—Katey J. McLachlan

PIPER WITH WILLIAM (HUMAN)

“Piper is our nineyear-old black Lab mix. She is the sweetest, most mellow dog you’ll ever meet. We adopted her at three years old when she was very ill. After a long rehabilitation, she shows us every day how thankful she is to be a part of our family. She doesn’t bark or swim or fetch, but remains a constant companion, ready for a pat from whoever’s handing them out. Piper enjoys our son, William, crawling all over her, using her as a bench and taking her on walks.”—Katey J. McLachlan

“Frank is our nine-year-old black and tan Dachshund. He’s as fearless as he is friendly. We adopted him at three months old for just $5, so we call him our fivedollar foot-long. Frank loves swimming, playing fetch, sneaking bites of our son’s food and burrowing in his blankets. Although he pretends to only ‘tolerate’ our son, oftentimes we find him cuddling up next to him. Oh yes and watch out, Frank is known to slip you the tongue if the moment is right.”—Katey J. McLachlan

CLOVER

“Clover loves treats, car rides, sitting on the coffee table and visiting friends at the office.”— Claudia Cheng

HERSHEY

“Hershey was rescued through Fat Kitty City. She is super active and playful and will chase and catch any type of toy for hours.”—Menka Belgal

58 stylefedh.com - August 2016

HOOVER AND KIRBY BANDIT AND ALLIE MAE

“Hoover and Kirby are brothers and were named after vacuum cleaners (when they were kittens they scarfed their food so quickly and left their plates clean). Their breed is called ‘flame point,’ due to the orange markings on their ears and tails.”—Bettie Grijalva

MARLEY

“Marley was a rescue from Recycled Pets and can sit, lie down and talk on command. He loves peanut butter, car rides and us!”— Menka Belgal

CHILI DOG

“Bandit and Allie Mae have a local yoga studio named after them (Spotted Dog Yoga). What we love about them is the way that they play hard and love big. Every morning, they wake us up early with their tongues out and a big smile on their faces—eager to enjoy what the day has to offer! They are the reason we have gotten to know Folsom so well, as they take us to any body of water or park that they can sniff out.”—Nick and Katie Clark

PUPPASAURUS REX WITH LALA (HUMAN)

“Puppasaurus Rex is the best pup because he lets our threeyear-old daughter treat him like a real-life baby doll. His favorite activities are stroller rides, shopping cart adventures and being rocked to sleep in the baby bassinet.”—Aimee Carroll

RUSTY

“You start with a bun. If you add some salt, butter, grease, fat, beans and meat, you get Chili Dog!”—Roger Snyder

“Rusty is a six-year-old Havanese. We got him from a local breeder as a puppy. He knows most of his toys by name, so if you spread them out and tell him to get a specific one like R2D2, he does; then you tell him to take it to his toy box and off he goes. He’s a very loving dog, but like Velcro. If you’re downstairs so is he. If you go upstairs, he follows.”—Leroy Zine

HANK

GATSBY

“Gatsby has a huge heart and is absolutely the sweetest boy! He’s my best friend and the keeper of all my secrets.”— Siobhán Russell Pritt

“Hank is a chocolate Lab and is pictured here running the show at the FLB Entertainment Center. He does an amazing trick where he makes food disappear instantly!”—Dan Dreher

Barkasana-Photo by Nicholas Wray.

Walkers, runners and their dogs are invited to compete in this third annual event; a post-race meal, goodie bag with both owner and dog treats, and T-shirt are included in race fees. totalbodyfitness.com/site/races

“Nugget is one of three fivemonth-old puppies we’re fostering through Recycled Pets NorCal. Nugget loves balls, squeaky toys, ropes, people and siestas in hammocks. He looks up to the hammock and cries for us to put him in there! He’ll be available for adoption this month.”—Menka Belgal

JACK

“Jack is nine years old. This picture was taken on Christmas morning; he was wondering if there were any more toys we forgot about!”—Dan Dreher

GINGER

JASPER

“Ginger is a rescue who resides in El Dorado Hills. She’s been very sick with several illnesses, so we call her our little money pit. Each time she gets over being ill, we love her even more.”—Marion Boyd

“This is my Frenchie, Jasper. He has the ability to make me laugh every single day. Every morning, I’m blessed to wake up to his smile and energy; each night, I’m comforted by his snores that put me to sleep.”—Kim Grabus

JIJI

“One look at JiJi and she falls over on her back, legs and arms outstretched, ready for a belly rub. She has big, round, gorgeous gold-green eyes and the softest black fur. She is a cuddle bunny, and her favorite spot is in Grandma’s quiet room curled up in the coziest spot she can find.”—Debbi Murzyn

COMET

“Sharkey Bad Boy is 14 years old. He was named ‘Sharkey,’ for his tendency to calmly circle his prey and then take a bite out of a leg; ‘Bad Boy’ was earned as his personality blossomed. His favorite pastimes are sitting on the computer keyboard and shredding up important paper documents. He is as loving as he is naughty. Head butts and kisses make him smile.”—Debbi Murzyn

SHARKEY BAD BOY

“Dude (one-and-a-half years old) is Kyra’s sidekick. They are inseparable. She got him her first year in college—not the best idea, but it’s turned out to be a great idea. Dude is a black Lab-pit bull combo, and he is very intuitive and extremely smart. He loves to play with other dogs and has lots of college-aged human friends who shower him with love, as they miss their own dogs they had to leave at home. Dude is the epitome of ‘man’s best friend.’”—Debbi Murzyn

“Comet is a new member of our family. He is a little ball of terrier energy and loves to play with dogs, especially big ones. He’s very sweet, smart and happy. We may have rescued him, but it feels like he has rescued us. He has brought joy and laughter to our house. I believe he dreams quite frequently, based on watching him twitch, groan and kick his feet while sleeping.”— Debbi Murzyn

DOTTIE WITH KIRSTEN (HUMAN)

BRODY AND MOMO

BOBOB

SCARLETT

“Bobob lives with us in Folsom by the Palladio where our walks take us. He came to us through our dog groomer after an elderly client of hers—who was a dachshund breeder—passed away. There were four dachshunds living with her client when she passed, and my groomer took them to her shop to see if she could find homes for them. Bobob was spending his nights in the grooming shop and was the only dog left on one of my visits there; as a senior, it was hard to find him a home. I let him stay a few nights in our home so he wouldn’t have to sleep in the shop, and that was all it took. Bobob never slept anywhere but our home after that. We are all seniors in this household, so Bobob fits right in!”—Mary Lou Truax 62 stylefedh.com - August 2016

Pet Portrait by Frankie Paquin.

“Scarlett came into my life after I lost a dear family pet and has mended my heart and brought me so much joy! Scarlett is funny and brave and sweet…if only she would learn to go down the stairs! She lives in Folsom and brings joy to everyone around her.”—Maureen McGuire

ZASU AND ZOEY DEXTER

“Dexter is a PomeranianHavanese mix and loves to dance on his hind legs for a bone. He also adores going for boat rides!”—Jennifer Allen

“Zasu and Zoey are two female senior Dobermans who were adopted in 2012 and 2014, respectively, from a Doberman rescue organization. Besides liking walks, long leisurely naps and meals, they are loving companions.”—Beverly Kelley

SUKI

“This is Suki. She was a stray that a friend rescued and is the sweetest dog you’ll ever meet. I was hesitant, as I didn’t have any experience with pit bulls, but now realize how much unwarranted prejudice there is against them. She has become the heart of our family!”— Naomi Chan-Jobe

SNICKERS

RAMSEY

“This is Snickers von Packed-withPeanuts, aka ‘Snick.’ He lives in Folsom and is a rescue beast and Verminator extraordinaire. He also enjoys swimming.”—Susan Laird

SCOUT

“Ramsey is our eight-and-a-half-year-old Doberman. She’s our fierce protector and loves unconditionally. Her favorite treats are pig ears and scratches on the chin.”—Nicci Ward

“Doberman Scout is three months old. She loves belly rubs and her Yoda chew toy. She wants to be just like big sister Ramsey when she grows up.”—Nicci Ward August 2016 - stylefedh.com 63

“Bebe and Rango are the sweetest rescues south of heaven! They’re both nine now and although they call Elk Grove home, they are very well heeled world travelers and only need one carrier (two for the price of one!). It’s a highly intensive training program, and sometimes there’s a dog that doesn’t graduate but goes on to have a ‘career change’ and gets the opportunity to be a normal family dog for some lucky person like me. BAXTER

NELLIE

“Baxter is special, as he is a rescue, along with being stubborn and loveable. We love his bully runs around the house, and he loves to snuggle on the couch. When he is at the Folsom Dog Resort, he is truly ‘the king’—talking all the time and acting like he owns the place. They say Baxter is one-of-a-kind and lovable.”—Debbie Newell

WOODY

“Woody is a 12-year-old that’s just as playful now as when he was a baby. He camps and hikes with me on a regular basis, and when he’s in the water he insists that we play fetch with the largest possible branch I can throw. His favorite things are food and walks.”—Scott Harrison

Mylapore Indian Cuisine Fresh Vegetarian Fare Excites the Senses by Lorn Randall // photos by Dante Fontana

“E

very day is a learning day.” This phrase was repeatedly spoken to me by my first employer, usually after I pretended to be an expert on something I truly wasn’t. Funny how those early lessons still ring true. Today I learned Southern Indian cuisine, which is Mylapore’s focus, differs dramatically from the Indian cuisine most of us are used to having. The eatery is also strictly vegetarian, so you won’t find many of the regular suspects. No tikka, butter chicken, vindaloo, kabobs or tandoori. The all-you-can-eat buffet table is also absent—and for good reason, according to Owner Jay Jayaraman. “Our philosophy is fresh every day. We start at 6 a.m. preparing just enough food for the day.” So what can you expect to see on the menu? There are some easily recognizable items for the novice: samosas, channa and paratha, for example. I asked Jay to make me dishes he thought I should try. First to come out was medhu vada— savory, cake-like, fried lentil donuts with tomato-onion, spiced yogurt and chutney dipping sauces. The tantalizing flavor combinations made me forget I was eating donuts for lunch. Talk about a great party appetizer! Next was vegetable pakoras, which featured deep-fried julienne

vegetables, cut so thinly they were hard to distinguish from each other. I believe it was eggplant, sweet potato and onion— hey, they’re deep-fried and delicious, and that’s about all you need to know!—again served with more addicting sauces (this time a brown sugar tamarind and spicy mint offering). Mylapore’s signature dish is the dosa, and they make at least 20 different varieties of these gigantic, thin, crispy “crepes.” I had the onion rava masala

dosa, which had to be served tri-folded to fit on the plate. Red onion grilled into the almost potato chip-like omelet Ravi Kesari left me wishing I hadn’t already obliterated my carb limit on the first dish. I still had to try the ravi kesari dessert of broken wheat, sugar, cardamom, cashews and raisins. What the heck, carb limits are silly anyway! Fresh vegetarian Indian dining in a casual atmosphere…what’s not to like?

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? In a word, my business is health. I’m a doctor practicing concierge-style naturopath medicine, which is a primary health care system that encourages the body’s self-healing process through the use of natural therapies drawing on both traditional healing methods and modern medical science. I use natural therapies in order to restore health— not simply to suppress symptoms. I work with patients to find the best health solutions for their lifestyle and needs. With my concierge-style practice, I bring this medicine directly to their home or office. I stumbled upon naturopathic medicine five years ago and haven’t looked back. Every day, I continue to be inspired by this approach and the incredible health transformations I witness. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? One principle of naturopathic medicine is docere, which is Latin for teacher and the root of the word doctor. I’m passionate about education, and I love doing health seminars in the community every opportunity I get. I want people to have a better understanding of their health so they can be their own best advocates in today’s health care. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? There is no question that graduating from medical school is quite the accomplishment, but I think I’m most proud of the fact that I found my calling and that I have the clarity and passion to pursue my dreams. Where do you go when the going gets tough? I go to nature. This is where I do my best thinking—where I can dig deep and find my path. A little yoga is also great for tension. What’s your biggest job perk? I get to do the job I love, which is a pretty big perk.

Photos by Dante Fontana.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? I’m a photographer in the Sacramento/Folsom area. My specialty is capturing weddings, along with families and children. I’ve been shooting seriously for five years, which has flown by and I’m having the time of my life. Photography has been a natural progression for me. I’ve been an artist since birth and have been taking pictures for projects to draw for as long as I can remember, so when I got the photo bug I fell hard and fast in love. Why is your staff the best in the business? My business is unique; when it comes to shooting weddings my son Chadd and I work together as a mother/son team. We work extremely well together and balance one another. I like the traditional, romantic shots, and he brings a younger, edgier flare—so by working together we’re able to merge both styles to create our look. Where do you go when the going gets tough? I spend time with family and friends, but mostly I spend time in prayer with God. The one thing I know for sure is He is in control, and my job is to trust Him. What’s your biggest job perk? Getting to meet people who I otherwise would never have the opportunity to meet. I’ve made some very great friendships through my job, and I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to be a part of their life and share my talent with them. What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? I love Fat’s Asia Bistro for a nice night out, but on the go I hit In-N-Out for a burger. What’s your favorite local business other than your own? Studio 415 Salon and Spa. I love getting my hair done, and it’s always such a treat to go visit my hair gal.

what the duck? The Maileys Get a Mallard by Tom Mailey

She’s a domestic mallard—larger than her wild brethern, bred not to fly. Her name is Regina. It was going to be Reggie until her feathers all came in brown. My wife calls her “Regilicous.” I pretty much just call her “duck.” I’d never wanted a duck. It was our son’s idea. Sam is 17—the last kid at home. He loves animals; we’ve got two dogs, a cat and a large gray fuzzball of a rabbit named Harrison that roams our yard. But a duck? I’m not sure why Sam set his mind on one, other than he can be a an odd duck himself sometimes. So, we got a duck. But not before learning about them. Having a duck is not something you just go do, unless you’re Old MacDonald and you have a farm. We have a backyard. But it’s sizable, and we found we could meet city regulations for keeping domesticated fowl. We read up about ducks. We asked around and got a lot of helpful advice, which mostly pertained to poop. Apparently, without going into detail, birds have no control over that, and can’t be potty-trained. With a duck, they all noted, it would be wherever, whenever. They were right. Then we found out about duck diapers. Yes, those are a thing. But don’t worry; we were as appalled as you to learn they exist. If going pantsless was good enough for Daffy or Donald, it was going to be good enough for our duck. And the fact is, unless the duck is in the house (which is never since the day she did that on our couch), it isn’t a problem. FOR MORE TOM’S TAKES, So now our backyard VISIT STYLEFEDH.COM. has a duck. And you know WHAT’S COMING what? We love her. She NEXT MONTH? waddles around with DON’T MISS STYLE’S her chest puffed out and READERS’ CHOICE head held high with a sort AWARDS: ROUND of regal duck dignity, and 2 “FAVORITE BUSINESSES!” it just makes you smile. 82 stylefedh.com - August 2016

She follows us like a curious web-footed toddler, and has developed a kinship with our dogs and even our cat, whom we’ve caught grooming her (Sam suggests he may actually be tasting her, but we choose not to believe that). Being a duck, Regina does occasionally cut loose with a brief series of startlingly loud quacks that sound not unlike the ragged smoker’s cackle of my late Aunt Gladys. But since our n e i g h b o r s h ave n ’ t broken out any shotguns yet, I’m assuming it’s too brief and infrequent to be annoying. When she is content, which is often, she sings to herself with gentle little squeaks and chirps. She isn’t just ornamental, either: She’s been great for our plants because she’s developed a sweet tooth for snails and slugs. Plus, that duck poop? We filter it from the small pond we dug for her (yes, we dug her a pond) and it is the Best.

Fertilizer. Ever. Seriously. This year’s zuchinni plants look like something out of Jurassic Park. I never thought I’d get a duck, and I cer tainly never thought I would like owning a duck. But I did, and I do. And maybe this is why: Two of our kids are already out of the house. Sam, even though Regina was his idea, will be off to college next year at this time. Maybe the duck, along with the rest of our menagerie, are there to fill the void that’s being left behind by life’s relentless forward progress. If so, I kind of like the idea of combating empty-nester syndrome with an actual bird. So, yeah. We got a duck.
